Intro to Database

Introduces the essential concepts that students need to create and use working databases. The student explores why databases are used, how to improve on alternatives such as spreadsheets, what their components are, and how they are developed. The student is introduced to the relational model and will define basic relational terminology. The entity-relationship (E-R) model, basic data modeling, and normalization process is explored and performed. The student is introduced to the basics of SQL, introducing statements for data definition and modifications, as well as SQL SELECT statements. This course exposes the student to database administration, including concurrency control, security, and backup/recovery. The student will also be introduced to several key database trends, including Web and XML databases, distributed databases, OLAP, data mining, and object-relational DBMSes.
