Leadership ethics concerns the problems of moral decision-making for those who occupy policy-making and policy-administering positions within an organization. Making liberal use of case studies and group discussion, this course investigates the grounds upon which leaders can and should make decisions affecting their organization, the public it serves and the institution(s) to which it belongs. Topics will include the difference between personal and leadership ethics, the goals of the organization and individual values, the moral obligations of corporate groups, the problem of ethical pluralism and a theory of justice. Cases will illustrate problems of leadership ethics in a variety of organizations, including business and government.
