Through an examination of select contemporary musical styles and a survey of the development of Western art music, students will learn how to actively listen to music and identify salient traits. Students will explore musical meaning, musical reception, and musical aesthetics as they apply to different cultures and different time periods. Attendance at two live musical performances outside the classroom is required. Prerequisites: College Reading Strategies, 10-808-101 or English 1, 20-801-201 or Written Communications, 10-801-195 or COMPASS score of 75 or higher.
